The Sony Gamescom conference is done and dusted and by all means it was a pretty impressive showing. There were no super surprises like the Tomb Raider one from Microsoft, but we did get a ton of games shown that we can look forward to. Uncharted 4 sadly wasn’t shown so if you are looking to see that you are going to be disappointed, but there was plenty else to see including exclusives, third party stuff, Indie focus and some new non-gaming things to be excited for.
Here’s the rundown:
inFAMOUS, LBP3, The Order and Bloodborne
The evening kicked off with a few trailers for upcoming games being showed. These included inFAMOUS: First Light DLC trailer, LittleBigPlanet 3, The Order: 1886 and Bloodborne. All are looking great and we know that Bloodborne has the attention of many. Here are those trailers.
The Tomorrow Children
The show then got away in earnest with Q-games heading to the stage to reveal something a little… different. The game is called The Tomorrow Children and is very different from their PixelJunk games, but we are intrigued. Check it out:
The Vanishing of Ethan Carter
Next up was the interesting looking The Vanishing of Ethan Carter. A murder mystery type game set in the early 20th century. It looks very Sherlock Holmes and definitely has our attention.
After that we had Mike Bithell who created the fantastic Thomas Was Alone on stage. His new game, called Volume, is inspired by MGS and if Thomas Was Alone is anything to go by this will be a treat.
Hollowpoint comes to the PS4 also and the high-octane shooter looks mighty impressive. One to look out for, for sure.
Earlier this week Ninja Theory announced that they would be revealing a new IP at Gamescom. Their art style was immediately recognisable as we got a glimpse at Hellblade. Not a lot was shown really, but Ninja Theory are known for their amazing worlds and strong lead characters. Excitement is high for this one
One of the most anticipated indie games has got to be Tequila Works’ Rime. We saw a little of it previously, and this new trailer shows a lot more of the world, the character and a little bit of the puzzles. It looks like it’s going to be one of those special games not to miss out on
We all know about Destiny and what it has to offer. Sony revealed that it is the most pre-ordered IP ever. EVER. The new trailer showed some of the multiplayer and we found out about some timed exclusives for Sony consoles and an expansion heading our way as early as December
Far Cry 4
Far Cry 4 was up next and following the success of Far Cry 3 there is lots of hype around this one from Ubisoft. We saw two videos here. The first shows off some of the areas and action in the game and it looks absolutely amazing to say the least. The other video revealed that, for PS gamers only, you will be given 10 Keys to Kyrat which will allow you to invite friends who don’t even have the game to play in your game for 2 hours.
Lord of the Rings: Shadow of Mordor
Sony didn’t slow down there though, they then brought some footage of Monolith’s Lord of the Rings: Shadow of Mordor to the screens. It looks easily to be the best LotR game ever.
Metal Gear Solid: Phantom Pain
Everyone’s favourite developer (weirdo) Hideo Kojima visited the stage next and we got to see some Metal Gear Solid: Phantom Pain footage where they showed us how the box has evolved and can be used in many ways.
One of the most interesting things from the show was the announcement of the first interactive teaser/trailer for a game called P.T. This can be downloaded RIGHT NOW on PSN (under demos) and you can check it out. Sounds like a fantastic idea.
Sony then announced that Playstation TV will be coming to Europe, and also mentioned PS Now heading that way, but no indication as to when it will reach our shores. They also announced some new features including SharePlay which will allow PS4 users to share games with people who don’t even have the game. More details when we have ’em.
Things got seriously creepy after that as we got a glimpse of Until Dawn. Needless to say, I am still recovering from what I saw there. It looks damn good, and damn scary
Driveclub is finally nearing release and we got to see a bit more of that. Some of how the actual clubs work was explained and we saw some more footage. It looks much better than it did originally, especially with the weather effects being shown off, but will still take some convincing.
One of the most innovative and greatest development studios arrived next in the form of Media Molecule as they announced that they are bringing the genius of Tearaway to PS4. It won’t be a simple port but a completely new experience. It looks fantastic and you don’t want to miss this one
Things FINALLY started coming to an end but not before we got to see Housemarque’s (Stardust, Resogun) new game called Alienation. It looks frenetic and fun and will definitely result in some epileptic fits. Can’t wait though.
Last, but certainly not least was a really cool surprise as Michel Ancel (THE LEGEND) came onto the stage to reveal what his new studio, Wild Sheep, were up to. It looks to be one hell of an ambitious project with a game called Wild. It’s a massive world where you can play as just about any living creature as you want. It looks absolutely spectacular and I cannot wait to see more of it.
That is one insane amount of games in just an hour show and that doesn’t even include the indie montage which showed some upcoming games such as Papers, Please and more. Oh, and DayZ PS4 edition was announced with cross-platform gameplay which is pretty damn cool.
Sony made sure to tell everyone that they were not going to be complacent and that definitely showed tonight. There is some amazing stuff coming out and it is an exciting time to be a gamer, that is for sure. What did you think of the show? Hit or miss from Sony? Let us know below.
