It seems that Ed Boon and his team can currently do no wrong when it comes to fighting games. It’s as if he’s had the recipe for an enjoyable fighting game since the release of the original Mortal Kombat in 1992. There’s definitely been some missteps on the way, but it looks like they have the 2D fighting games waxed these days. If you played the original Mortal Kombat reboot you might recall Freddy Kruger as a downloadable character and in Mortal Kombat X Jason appeared out of the shadows, along with various other horror film adapted characters.
It’s quite obvious why Ed Boon would be open to a fighter based on horror films, but never has it got to a point that he ever spoke about the possibility of a fighting game based of horror films. Here’s what he had to say to Game Informer when asked about a game purely based on horror films:
Yes, yes! You know, as we’ve been accumulating them, that idea has been coming up more and more frequently. You brought it up and a few other people have brought it up like ‘why don’t you do a horror movie fighting game?’ Maybe one day we’ll do it.”
If Warner Bros. Games will bite remains to be seen, but it’s something we think might just work. For now it’ll remain a dream… where Freddy gets to haunt you.
