The Burning Question: Is Uncharted the Last Action “Hero”?
I was hit by a rather sobering thought earlier this year when Dawid mentioned to me that following Uncharted 4 we are unlikely to see anything quite of that nature again. A linear action adventure game that is full of incredible set pieces, treasure, damsels in distress, damoiseaus in distress… or falling off cliffs screaming OH CRAP. It’s the last we will see of Nate, Sully, Elena and co., but possibly the genre it filled too.
I know there is the Tomb Raider franchise still out there, but as much as I loved the reboot and half of the sequel that I have played, it’s just not quite the same to me, purely because it has those sandbox areas and not nearly as many epic set pieces. If you think about it, the Indiana Jones genre is lost with Uncharted. In fact, the closest thing I have come to playing something like it since is perhaps Quantum Break, and that’s purely because it is a linear, story focused game, but the similarities end there.
Uncharted will forever have a special place in my heart and my gaming memories. Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune was mind-blowing the first time I played it, Uncharted 2 doubly so. Uncharted 3 was a bit hit and miss for me and even the Vita spin-off was great. Uncharted 4 was the climax of the series, and a fitting one too and perhaps of the genre.
I could be wrong of course. Perhaps in-between all the FPS games, beneath the massive pile of open-world games, hidden somewhere in the cracks of all the online focused games we get nowadays, maybe… just maybe there is a new action adventure game waiting to be discovered. Sure there might still be Uncharted spin-offs but with Naughty Dog retiring the series from their development plans, who will take up the mantle and give us our next truly epic, truly inspiring action hero? Hopefully someone picks it up.
My burning question though, to bring it back, is this… is Uncharted the last of its kind? Will we see something like it in the future? I sure hope so.
