One of the first questions many of us asks when new tech is revealed is: How much? Problem is, often the companies in question don’t really want to give us that information just yet, since it is a) probably very expensive and b) they still need to convince us that we want it through PR and marketing.
Xbox Boss, Phil Spencer is currently in this mode of not quite telling, but when asked he did say that Project Scorpio will be a Premium device, but won’t see unheard of prices:
So I think you will feel like it’s a premium product, a premium console. And not something, anything more than that. So I wouldn’t get people worried that this thing is going to be unlike any console price you’ve ever seen. We didn’t design it that way. That said, the opening price point for the Xbox One S, and the different hard drive sizes that is a critical part of this whole product. When I think about it as a product line, you should expect the pricing to kind of be in line with that.
So what will be seen as unheard of? The PS3 originally launched at a whopping $600 back in 2007, which was very steep. The PS4 Pro, the console the Scorpio will be compared to the most, is launching at $400, the same price as the original price of the PS4. That said, the specs of the Scorpio is expected to be much higher than the PS4 Pro.
What this all means for us here in South Africa still remains to be seen, and depending on our economy, we might see a console releasing in the R10k region. Lets hope not!
