It seems we might have to wait a while for a new Battlefield as most of DICE‘s resources will be allocated to the Star Wars Battlefront sequel scheduled for 2017.
Blake Jorgensen, Electronic Arts CFO, mentioned while speaking at the Nasdaq 35th Investor Program, that there won’t be “another Battlefield back for a couple of years.” With the current game being the success that it is and geared for a long list of expansions, it’s not that much of an issue for lovers of the franchise. Battlefield 1 definitely has legs, so waiting a bit for the next installment isn’t that daunting a thought.
Now, with so much attention placed on Star Wars, one can only deduce that it’s going to be a long standing project that could span from 2017 well into 2019. “I think if there was criticism, they just wanted more, and so we’re taking that criticism to heart as we build the next game and trying to address any of the issues that they had.” Jorgensen commented on the original Battlefront, noting that it has something to prove with the sequel where the original may have fallen short.
Jorgensen added: “The other thing is, we were really working with the old canvas of Star Wars, the old trilogy […] Next year we’ll have the opportunity to leverage more of that content from the new movies and we think that’ll make the opportunity much larger.”
That’s some statement, encouraging even. They definitely won’t run out of historic material or user feedback to improve on the next episode. Here’s hoping it fires like a well-tuned blaster instead of leaving us setting phasers to stun.
