When the news hit that a sequel for The Last of Us Part 2 hit, it not only made my day, it almost made me cry. The announcement trailer was the one I was hoping to see at this year’s E3, but I’m glad Naughty Dog decided to show it to us now. It gives us all something to look forward to. However, we’ve already written about the trailer, so I won’t go into detail about it but some new details have surfaced. First of all, the lead character will be Ellie this time round. Secondly, the game takes place five years after the first game, making our heroine about 19 years old.
There will also be a slight contrast to the first game, as explained by Neil Druckmann.
If the first game, the theme was the love between these two characters… This story’s the counter of that. It’s about hate.
The big surprise of the trailer was, of course, seeing both Ellie and Joel. The one thing the team said regarding a sequel was that they weren’t going to revisit the dynamic duo. Obviously, the trailer proves otherwise. This may bring about some concern with major fans, but Druckmann is asking us to trust him, and I do so willingly.
So much thought went into this – I know there’s trepidation about going back to these characters. We feel that as well. No-one loves these characters more than we do, and we wouldn’t do it if we didn’t have the right idea. I had ideas with different characters and it didn’t feel right. The Last of Us is about these two characters. All I ask is that fans of the first one put some faith in us – we’re going to do right by you.
I really look forward to learning more about this game in the future. But, for now, I’m just glad it’s out in the open and the ball is moving.
