With 800,000 players, Nostalrius shows that many World of Warcraft players loved the vanilla content of the game. The server was shut down in April and while many hoped that Blizzard would launch their own “pristine” servers, that never happened.
An online petition with 250,000 signatures got Blizzard’s attention and it agreed to meet with Nostalrius’ admin.
After no news after the sit down at Blizzard and after BlizzCon 2016, many of the veterans of Nostalrius decided to release their classic server’s source code to the Legacy community. The Elysium Project was started, with many putting hours into rolling code and player information from the old server. Elysium has been undergoing weeks of stress tests and should launch in a couple of weeks.
Will Blizzard serve a cease-and-desist order to Elysium as well? We will have to wait and see.
