SA Gamer Awards 2016: Best Action-Adventure Game

Ah, the ever elusive “Action-Adventure” genre. For games that do not hold a quantifiable genre, classing them as an action-adventure is always a safe bet since there is a lot of adventure and action going on in games of various calibres. But a truly great action-adventure title will excel in the genre’s namesake. A burgeoning adventure that takes you through incredible locations, meeting characters that will find a place in your heart and undertake a journey that is both important and captivating. The action part shouldn’t be left out either as the game should make your pulse skyrocket to the point of dizziness and have you on the edge of your seat as you are faced with seemingly insurmountable odds. It’s easy for a game to receive the “Action-Adventure” tag, but it’s another thing to truly stand out as a hallmark in this often populated genre. There was only one game we had in mind for the winner this year and it won unanimously:

Uncharted 4

Big surprise, the game that is basically like a better Indiana Jones won the action-adventure category. However, Uncharted 4 transcended to a place that we don’t often see. It’s the encapsulation of a proper adventure with its swashbuckling journey through pirate history and all of the wonderful locations that you had to visit to get that next clue. It always had forward momentum and it didn’t stop for anything. You were always engrossed in one area or another while also being invested in the individual stories of the characters who tagged along with you. The action was jam-packed with some of the best setpieces that we have seen in gaming history and there always was one more ruin to climb (and almost fall to your death because a brick was loose).  Uncharted 4 is essentially the definition of an action packed adventure and we honestly couldn’t think of a suitable contender strong enough to topple it. There have been some wonderful action-adventure titles in 2016, but Uncharted 4 is comfortably on top of the pack.

Runner-Up: Gears of War 4

Honourable Mentions: Dishonored 2, Watch Dogs 2, The Last Guardian
