PC had a pretty interesting year, with Microsoft finally opening the gates between Windows 10 and Xbox One for some titles. People with only a PC suddenly could play a limited selection of Xbox One titles, with flawless cross-platform multiplayer. It has also been a stellar year for strategy buffs.
With over two decades of games under its belt it was time for Sid Meier’s Civilization to get some serious changes. For the first time ever the city tile has been destacked, making placement of amenities, cities and sieges so much. Various improvements made the early to mid-game much more interesting than what Civ 5 had on offer and having new systems to master meant that old veterans needed to take the time to read and practice again before tackling the harder difficulties. Just one more turn indeed.
Runner-up: Total War: Warhammer.
Honourable mentions: Planet Coaster and Stellaris
