A day may come when we finally get another Half-Life, but not the way we expect
An AMA (ask me anything) session was recently held by Gabe Newell on Reddit, where people were eager to poke and prod about the likelihood of a Half-Life 3. As per usual, Gaben avoided the question like the plague, but there were some intriguing tidbits offered about a potential spin-off to the series that may or may not be in the pipeline. Gabe’s response to the question whether Valve is working on a single-player game: “Yes”. Classic Gabe.
Other users further elaborated on the question by asking whether Valve had a new IP set within the Half-Life/Portal universe, with which Gabe emphatically responded with “Yep”. To any and every fan of Valve this could mean a myriad of things, but more likely than not, it includes the use of HTC Vive. Gabe actually had more than one word answers later on stating that “We think VR is pretty important as a tool for interesting games.” Again, this leaves everything for the imagination, but it’s clear that Valve is backing the HTC Vive and that they are working on either a VR project OR a spin-off. This is Valve though, so it’s all up in the air at the moment for all kids anticipating something new from them.
The mention of Source 2 also popped up in the AMA, to which it seems they’re going full force with their new engine, making the statement that they aren’t giving up on their technology. “We are are using it as the foundation of some unannounced products,” Gabe muttered.
Other than that, Valve’s involvement in movies with J.J. Abrams came to the fore which is apparently still in the works.Let’s hope it’s not a suck-fest or that Gabe will be the supplier of dialogue for any of it.
