Hideo Kojima went through some nightmarish times with Konami. It’s made worse by the fact that he is an eccentric creator who should truly not be under the constraints of a terrible publisher and should be allowed to let his crazy ideas breathe. We know that Konami had a shadowy hand in the creation of Metal Gear Solid V which caused the game’s endings to be fractured and something not quite complete with the experience. Kojima and Konami’s breakup was a monumental one and it was quite the public display as well with a lot of heated emotions and unreserved hatred for the publisher.
However, Kojima now has his own studio, his own game that he is working on and nobody to compromise his vision. Recently he had an interview with IGN and had the following words to say about his experience with Konami:
The me that stands here now is the product of the past 53 years of my life. Everything I experienced over 53 years; movies I’ve seen, books I’ve read, music I’ve listened to, games I’ve played, people I’ve met and the 30 years spent in this industry, have formed who I am. Not one of these things has been without purpose, including my experience creating games at Konami. I’m embarking on a new challenge with a fresh slate, but I intend to keep pushing the creative envelope until the day I die. I believe my experiences over the past 53 years won’t lead me astray.
There’s a lot of sense to what he says. He has experienced the awful side of the gaming industry first hand and has learned tremendously from the painful experience. While Konami still deserves all of the scorn thrown their way, they have made Kojima into a powerhouse who will deliver some excellent experiences to us in the future.
