This Kickstarter is all about scratching that Ghosts ‘n Goblins itch

Who remembers playing Ghosts ‘n Goblins (or Ghouls ‘n Ghosts) when they were younger? I always found it to be ridiculously difficult, but that didn’t stop me from trying again and again. If you enjoy the idea of games that follow in the footsteps of that crazy arcade platformer, you need to see the Kickstarter for Battle Princess Madelyn.

You play as a young knight, Madelyn, with her ghostly pet dog Fritz. You are up against an evil wizard, large skeletons and more in the spiritual successor that I didn’t realise I needed to have. Battle Princess Madelyn will explore a bit more than her predecessor, looking for collectibles and hidden stages and visits to friendly towns.

The reason why this game is being made is probably the biggest draw (for me at least). Christopher Obritsch got the idea after having to repeatedly play the first level so that his daughter could see the first boss and she said that she wanted to be in the game, fighting that boss. Luckily Chris knows a thing or two about making games and offered Madelyn her own game. “But Daddy, girls can’t be knights,” to which he replied “Pfft, what colour do you want your armour?”

The Kickstarter has 28 days to go and is already sitting on CA$42,000 of the CA$60,000 required to get funding. If you like the idea of revisiting Ghouls ‘n Ghosts with some modern gaming mechanics, this looks like it could be the start of something beautiful.
