In a year when the old school has made a return in a big way, another franchise is set to bring you back to the wonder years. Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap (or Wonder Boy III) is coming with not only a whole new look (and a stunning one at that), but will be getting a new hero.
Announced via the PlayStation Blog, Wonder Girl will be a new playable character which plays identically to her male counterpart. Not only is the design adorable but the developers have even gone so far as to add a new sprite for Wonder Girl in the games 8-bit mode. The announcement trailer below shows off Wonder Girl in all her glory.
This will not be the first time a female playable character will be available in the franchise. Last year’s Wonder Boy Returns, which released on Steam, allowed for players to go through the game as Tina, Wonder Boys girlfriend whom he must rescue. This was also a remake looking to add new characters.
Away from the awesome inclusion of Wonder Girl, the trailer really shows the beauty of the upcoming Metroidvania downloadable. Gameplay looks tight, the animation is top notch with those little details that make the heart swoon, and the music (albeit a small taste) is hitting all the right notes.
It is awesome that remakes of games can now take steps to be more inclusive. Wonder Girl was in no way necessary yet is incredibly welcomed. Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap is hitting the Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch on April 19th. The game is currently available for preorder on PSN at 20% off.
This is not the only Wonder Boy remake coming this year, as Wonder Boy and the Cursed Kingdom (based on Wonder Boy in Monster World) is coming later this year on all the above as well as PC. So get ready for that needed sense of wonderment because it does not appear to be stopping anytime soon.
