Prepare to become the ultimate pop-star/idol. And all you’ll need is your voice and your smartphone thanks to the PlayLink app ‘SingStar mic’. I’ve not played a Singstar title since the games instalments on PlayStation 2. Back then wired mics were needed and you would feel like Alicia Keys standing on stage and screaming…I mean singing. Fast forward years later and although I’m holding a smartphone up to my face and not a mic, I almost feel like Alicia again.
Turning your smartphone into a mic is actually a brilliant idea (hats off to Sony). Now instead of worrying about setting up multiple mics to your system all players will have to do is whip out their mobile devices, download the SingStar mic app and you’re all good to go. No more wires to get in the way or the pesky task of finding the SingStar mic adapter to plug into the PlayStation. Becoming a music star has never been easier. So much so that I feel that it’s time to celebrate with SingStar Celebration.
Before I knew it, it was an hour later and I practically went through the majority of the game’s list of tracks.
Getting back to basics
As I mentioned its been years since I last played a SingStar title so jumping back into a game like this is expected to be a mission right? Wrong! As soon as I downloaded the app and started the game I was able to jump into the first song. Okay yes, I did horribly (you know it’s all about the bass…I mean pitch of one’s voice) but I still could not believe how easy it was to setup and just jump in. Before I knew it, it was an hour later and I practically went through the majority of the game’s list of tracks. Every song brought a new challenge, with me having to always change my tone and pitch. Sounds annoying doesn’t it but in actual fact it’s not! I found this mechanic incredible. But then again this is a SingStar title so I would be disappointed if it wasn’t set up this way.
At first, I thought the tracklist was awful as it didn’t have any of my favourite songs currently out on the top charts played on the radio stations but after looking a little more closely I realised that SingStar Celebrations tracklist is actually quite extensive in the perspective that it has something for all ages and fans. Rock, Pop and Dance. Make sure to check out the tracklist below. In addition to the game’s tracklist, players/fans can also access an online store with over 500 tracks to choose from. These tracks have to be purchased, but demos of the songs can be downloaded for free and tried out.
Following on from the track list the multiplayer aspect is as I remembered it back from the PS2 era. Going up against someone was both hilarious and fun. Trying to keep focused on your own voice while your competitor is screaming next to you is quite a challenge. Indeed singing a duet or competitively is quite a treat although the game only hosts a two-player simultaneous play. The 8 player mode is in fact just a pair of two players in four teams that take turns to pass the mic to either sing through a set of choruses from different songs or playlists. Which brings us to another plus included in the SingStar mic app and that’s the fact that you can create playlists from within the app. A neat little feature I thought.
All in all, SingStar joins the PlayLink crowd of titles in being a really good party title that’s easily accessed and has something for all ages and groups.
All in all, SingStar joins the PlayLink crowd of titles in being a really good party title that’s easily accessed and has something for all ages and groups. There is truly not much to it and is simply just a ‘grab your phone’ and ‘play’ game that everyone can be good at. It’s obviously best played with friends and family but can also be enjoyed alone in the comfort of your lounge with no audience or fans watching. Indeed becoming a sing-star is just around the corner for you, so what are you waiting for?
