This is nothing new for the genre. We’ve seen console exclusive characters since Namco started the trend with the release of SoulCalibur 2 on PS2, Xbox and Gamecube. The PS2 version had Heihachi, Xbox got Spawn and the GameCube saw Link from the Legend of Zelda. Later on SoulCalbiur IV saw Darth Vader and Yoda being used on PS3 and Xbox 360, but ultimately ended up being available on both consoles via DLC. Now Mortal Kombat X will be following a similar trend.
Yes, Mortal Kombat did have Kratos as part of the DLC, but Xbox owners got nothing unique. According to an interview with IGN Ed Boon plans to bring console exclusive DLC to Mortal Kombat X is in development:
All’s not lost if your favourite doesn’t make the cut, however. Boon promised the roster would be expanded with DLC post-launch, as well as revealed that yes, console-specific exclusive fighters would again be back.
He does not confirm if both PS4 and Xbox One will receive their own characters, we’ll have to wait for that. I thought it was awesome to play as Kratos in the PS3 version of Mortal Kombat. Bring it on I say.
