As with most games, this generation of consoles are having a tough time to meet the 60FPS benchmark. The Xbox One has been suffering under the pressure mostly, but Naughty Dog has confirmed that achieving it on the PS4 for their upcoming AAA title is not going to be an easy task. In fact, the creative director, Neil Druckmann, told Game Informer that it’s “really fucking hard” to achieve that. He added to that:
That’s true for any game.
It was really hard on The Last of Us: Remastered, and that’s a game we had finished and we knew exactly what the end result needs to look like.
And here we’re trying to push the boundaries of what this game can look [like], and do realistic, real-time cutscenes – and trying to do 60FPS is really hard.
The objective for us is just to make the best experience and right now we’re trying to push the look.
Then we’ll see where we’re at and re-assess. We’re constantly making choices throughout production of what’s going to make the game feel best and look its best.
He did take the time to praise the architecture of the PS4 and the ease it takes to develop for it in general:
It’s butter. Just smooth.
It’s pretty amazing, to tell you the truth. There are things that aren’t issues that used to be issues in the past. It’s amazing how quickly you forget.
There’s always limits on resources, but all the problems that used to exist are gone. We just have a new set of problems now.
