CD Projekt discusses the graphics downgrade

When I first saw the Witcher 3 at E3 2013, it was jaw-droppingly beautiful. Meditating wasn’t done on a menu, allowing you to watch a time-lapse of the world around you, a scene so awe-inspiring it felt like I was watching something on National Geographic.

Then I started playing on XBO and things looked a bit different. It was still gorgeous, but some of those small touches that pushed it to the point that you couldn’t stop staring were missing. I eventually dismissed those thoughts, thinking it was something that had to be sacrificed for the console version and I was getting the game on PC soon, where I would replay it with that E3 level of grandeur. I was sad when I finally booted it up and this was not the case. So were a lot of other people, who are now complaining about the graphical downgrade. CD Projekt has acknowledged the step down and that nobody at the studio feels good about it, but it was unavoidable.
”If you’re looking at the development process, we do a certain build for a tradeshow and you pack it, it works, it looks amazing. And you are extremely far away from completing the game,” Iwinski explained. “Then you put it in the open world, regardless of the platform, and it’s like, ‘Oh shit, it doesn’t really work.’ We’ve already showed it, now we have to make it work. And then we try to make it work on a huge scale. This is the nature of games development,” said co-founder Marcin Iwinski.
Iwinski also mentioned the suggestions that the PC version was held back by the console editions. He said it was partially accurate, but mentioned that without the console releases, the game wouldn’t exist on any platform, as they wouldn’t be able to afford making a game of this scale exclusive to PC.
”Maybe we shouldn’t have shown that [trailer], I don’t know, but we didn’t know that it wasn’t going to work, so it’s not a lie or a bad will – that’s why we didn’t comment actively. We don’t agree there is a downgrade but it’s our opinion, and gamers’ feeling can be different,” he said. “If they made their purchasing decision based on the 2013 materials, I’m deeply sorry for that, and we are discussing how we can make it up to them because that’s not fair.”
Do you feel the moaning is founded? Do you feel you were duped by earlier trailers?

If it has the letters RPG in it, I am there. Still battling with balancing trying to play every single game that grabs my interest, getting 100% in a JRPG, and devoting time to my second home in Azeroth.
