Hands-On: Ratchet and Clank (PS4)

Ratchet PS4

I was ecstatic when my favourite duo was announced in a new PS4 game. It came as a big surprise as there was not a single word around a game even coming out. The initial trailer looked amazing and let me tell you that, after getting a hands-on with it, the game is going to be great.

On the floor at E3 there were 2 levels available to play in the game. The first brought back fond memories of the train level from Ratchet and Clank 1, only the vibrant environment looked so good you can hardly compare the two.

The same slick gameplay returns in the game with tons of crazy weapons to choose from. New in this game is the Pixelizer which turns enemies into pixels with hilarious effect. It’s kind of great seeing all those funky weapons returning and in such great fashion.

That brings me to my next point which is that the visuals in the game are out of this world. It is so beautiful that you can only stop and stare at times. There is so much depth in the background that you will die because you lose concentration. There is so much there that you can’t help but appreciate the efforts. Small things such as changing shapes of a globe when an enemy hits it will not go amiss.

The gameplay in general felt right at home with all the Ratchet and Clank specialities in place. It was running at 30fps but honestly you wouldn’t even realise it, it’s that smooth. I have to mention the Pixar like visuals once again, and the fact that the transition between cutscene and gameplay was barely noticeable. It’s of such a high level that you have to wonder how they actually did it.

The second level available throws you into a typical Ratchet and Clank boss battle and I am happy to report that they have not lost that knack of making a great boss battle. It’s your typical platformer type fight and coupled with the stunning visuals, it just works so well.

I have to just mention that Insomniac’s ability to create funky, fun weapons is once again a core aspect of the game and the variety makes you want to play more and more.

I was fortunate enough to have developer, Sonny Sidhu, talk me through a lot of the game and what we can expect. I can tell you that there will be no multiplayer whatsoever. The game is working in conjunction with the movie so we should look out for a release date at a similar time. He also mentioned that there will be seven new planets to explore, new weapons, new boss battles and a fantastic new storyline, narrated by none other than Captain Quark.

Ratchet and Clank felt like it was going to the wayside recently but the following it has is undeniable and it’s so great to see the franchise coming back with so much gusto and wow factor. If you like your old school 3D platformers then you are going to love the new Ratchet and Clank, that is a guarantee.
