Something I really love about Voice Actor Tuesday is that I’m continually learning about voice actors I didn’t know about before. Often they’ve voiced characters I know and love, and I just never looked them up. Which brings me to this week’s featured voice actor, Matthew Mercer, who I discovered just last week while watching a YouTube video about game mastering (that’s running a pen and paper roleplaying game like Dungeons & Dragons or Pathfinder). Turns out Mercer has done a bunch of similar videos for YouTube channel Geek & Sundry, and he runs a roleplaying game called Critical Role with other voice actors, including a couple that we’ve already featured here, Laura Bailey and Liam O’Brien. I have to say, this was a really awesome (and super geeky) discovery for me.
Back to voice acting, Mercer has been providing voices for anime, animation and video games for a long while now. He played Alvin, one of my favourite characters from the Tales of Xillia games, and the male norn player character in Guild Wars 2, as well as lead characters in Star Ocean: The Last Hope and Fire Emblem: Awakening. He’s been in tons of other games as well, playing significant characters as well as ‘additional voices’. In animation, he’s appeared in Bleach, Naruto Shippuden, Thundercats, Naruto SD, Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic, Attack on Titan, Digimon Fusion, Kill La Kill, Aldnoah.Zero, Knights in Hyrule and Tenkai Knights, to name a few! His first video game role was ‘Zartu/Dark Unicorn’ in 2002’s Pryzm, Chapter 1: The Dark Unicorn.
