Freestyle Games did not quite reach the heights in this generation with Guitar Hero Live as Harmonix and Neversoft did in the PS3, Xbox 360 and Wii era. Set your mind back to the mid to late 00’s and you’ll recall a world that was all but obsessed with the Guitar Hero franchise. There was just something very special about holding that plastic guitar in your hand and playing your favourite songs. Now it’s come to light that an MMO game, linked to the brand, was in the making and never saw the light of day.
The crew over at Unseen64 claims they have been in touch with the studio who were contracted by Activision to work on the project. Virtual Fairground says that it was in development throughout 2010 and was going to be a browser-based tie-in with the Guitar Hero franchise, named Hero World. Freestyle Games actually came up with the concept, but they did not have the time to make it happen, as they were busy with DJ Hero, hence it went to Virtual Fairground.
Unfortunately Activision milked the Hero franchise (remember DJ Hero and Band Hero?) and in 2011, when this new service was supposed to go live, Activision put a lid on the franchise. The game would link to any format (PS3, Xbox 360, Wii) and would also link to your Facebook account. Here is a complete breakdown of the cancelled tie-in browser-based game:
