Shuhei Yoshida just about symbolises everything we’ve come to love and respect about the PlayStation brand in the modern age. Along with Mark Cerny and Andrew House they make a fantastic team. When you hear that Shuhei Yoshida is not sure that a PS5 will ever exist you take note. This could just be him playing games with the media, which is very possible, but in an interview at the DICE event in February this year (with Game Informers’ Lorne Lanning) he had an interesting answer when asked about the PlayStation 5:
I said, ‘What does the PlayStation 5 look like?’ And he said, ‘You mean if…’ And I was like, ‘Whoa. Are you willing to say that on stage?’ And he said, ‘Yeah, it’s an if.’
It was a really interesting thing; he didn’t give me a clear answer, but he’s hinting at, ‘We need to be more agile, none of us know what the future really looks like so how do we adapt to it faster? To me, that’s the way he was sort of thinking about it, which I think is the right way think about it.
He confirms this in the latest Game Informer Show (head to 45:00):
Right now this here is based on something Lanning heard, and is definitely not what Shuhei Yoshida is endorsing. But, if this is true it would be an interesting take on consoles of the future. The timing for his question is good as, if the PS5 is in development (which if very likely might still be), they’ll be in the thick of all PS5 right now behind the scenes.
For now, treat this as nothing more than a rumour.
