For several years now Xbox players have walked away with the biggest smile, as their Xbox Live Gold subscriptions have generally been much cheaper than what PlayStation owners were paying on a monthly basis. That’s about to change in a very big way.
Last night Microsoft sent out emails to subscribers to confirm the following:
[quote]As a valued Xbox Live Gold member, we’d like to thank you for being part of the Gold community. We continually evaluate our offerings and are always working to provide a balance of service and value that meet the needs of our customers.
As such, the prices of your Xbox Live Gold subscription packages will be increasing. As of June 20, 2016 the price of your 1 month Xbox Live Gold subscription will increase from R 50,00 to R 159,00. If your subscription is currently set to auto-renew before June 20, 2016, you will be charged the current price at the time of your next scheduled auto-renewal. If your subscription is currently set to auto-renew after June 20, 2016, you will be charged the new price at the time of your next scheduled auto-renewal.
To ensure your renewal takes place without interruption, and you continue access to the most advanced multiplayer, up to 4 free games every month, and exclusive discounts of up to 50-75% off games, please confirm your account and payment information is up to date at https://billing.microsoft.com.

The month-to-month cost of a Xbox Live Gold subscription sees a massive increase that’s more than triple the normal cost and the 12-month subscription will jump from R590,00 to R979,00, which is close to double the cost. By comparison PSN charges R99,00 for a month-to-month, R219,00 for 3 months and R749,00 for a 12-month subscription.
Keep in mind that we as South African’s have been scoring with that cheap Xbox Live Gold for a long time as it’s one of the cheapest costs around the world, when converting from other currencies such as the Pound, but it’s still going to be a hard pill to swallow.
So what now? Stock up on those cheap Xbox Live Gold subs before 20 June.
