Opinion: Fighting FOMO is a real thing

If there’s one game that’s taken the limelight recently it has to be Overwatch. I’m not going to talk about it in this post, but all the talk has made me want to play it. However, I refuse to give in to my desire as my brain knows better: I will not like Overwatch. So I need to get over my FOMO until a few games that I really want get released. Now, there are a few ways to deal with FOMO:

1 – Give in to the FOMO and buy the game.

2 – Ignore it as best as you can until everyone moves on to the next game.

3 – Play a substitute in your arsenal to quench the thirst.

I went with option number 3. The first thing I did was scan my existing digital and physical library of games and I found two games that would help kill the FOMO: Smite and Star Wars Battlefront. Smite is a Free-to-Play MOBA style game on PC and consoles. I downloaded it recently to check it out and to curb my desires. It had the right amount of cartoon arena fighting that I needed to replace Overwatch. Battlefront on the other hand was the fast-paced “shoot all the people” game that I felt I needed to play as well. Together, the two games have helped scratch the itch quite a lot.

It’s not the first time I’ve tried something like this. When Evolve came out, I turned to Warframe (thank goodness). When The Division released, I replayed The Last of Us. When the digital version of Dying Light came out (physical was delayed so I had to stop myself from buying the digital version) I played Dead Island. This system of FOMO fighting works for me and it has saved me from spending a lot of money on games that are good, just not to my tastes.

Have you ever had to fight FOMO, and how’d you do it?
