SA Gamer Awards 2016: Best Game No One Played

best-no-one-played

Games often get lost in the ethos of modern gaming. The industry moves at an incredible pace and gamers generally have a short attention span. You can see this clearly when you compare active player numbers at the start of a game’s lifespan to the end of the first month since launch. There’s a massive dip unless the game has some truly special staying power or manages to become the gaming zeitgeist for a little while. However, through the blitzkrieg of games, sometimes it’s easy to let some of them fall by the wayside. Sometimes it’s simply a question of poor timing when the game releases or it’s because there hasn’t been a lot of marketing done. In 2016, the gaming world was on fire during the October and November period. Games were releasing left and right and it was almost impossible to keep up with the sheer volume of titles being released during that time.

So, which game deserves the title of ‘Best Game No One Played’? It could be none other than:

Watch Dogs 2

Watch Dogs 2 certainly wasn’t an under-the-radar title that nobody paid attention to. It’s still a big budget AAA release from the masters of franchise Ubisoft themselves. The game received a great critical reception, including a shining recommendation from yours truly. However, the game performed poorly in sales, especially compared to the launch of the original. This admittedly baffled me because the game was extremely good and has great value for money. There are some explanations for why this happened. It could be because the community still felt burned after Ubisoft’s antics with the original game, there wasn’t enough interest stirred up for the game or it can simply be that it released in the aforementioned crazy release months and was pushed out by some more established or anticipated titles. Whatever the case may be, Watch Dogs 2 remains underplayed and it’s a shame since it is well worth your time and money investment. With the game appearing in sales so frequently, you should definitely consider picking it up if you haven’t already.

Runner-Up: The Last Guardian

Honourable Mentions: Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE, Titanfall 2

I am way too tall, played way too many games and I love to write about what we love about games. In the end, I’m just being #Thabolicious
