First-person shooters had a bit of a renaissance recently by, funnily enough, returning to their roots. FPS games became stale, modern military shooters that just had you go through some impoverished nations and shooting dudes in Taliban outfits with a backdrop of brown desert and ruined buildings. The fun aspect of FPS games of the past was something that was shelved in favour of these cookie-cutter Desert Simulators. However, we saw a resurgence of the visceral, fast and violent gameplay of old starting with Wolfenstein: The New Order that had a wonderful singleplayer campaign that was filled with over-the-top madness such as dual-wielding two super shotguns and blasting Nazis to Hell.
Bethesda continued this train with DOOM, which also stepped up the absurd fun factor by Satanic proportions and we finally had FPS games that were actually fun to play. MachineGames are the developers that you can thank for Wolfenstein: The New Order and it seems they have been busy lately. Pete Hinds was recently on a podcast with the guys at Kinda Funny Games and he had the following to say:
MachineGames has been hard at work on something, which I can tell you I have played. It is fucking bananas. And I can’t wait to show what it actually is.
So we know that MachineGames are indeed working on something and it’s probably going to be another classic style FPS. Also, if you remember from Bethesda’s E3 conference last year, there was a little teaser in their opening that said “New_Colossus” right under the other two Wolfenstein games. It’s pure speculation of course, but it is very plausible that we’ll be getting another Wolfenstein entry soon. At least we know it’s fucking bananas, so there’s that.
