With the announcement that the NES mini was being discontinued many people questioned why this was the case, but Nintendo have their reasons for doing so. Now it seems the SNES is about to receive the same treatment as it’s now rumoured that the SNES will indeed also see a classic edition of the console arriving later this year.
This rumour comes via a close source to Nintendo that provided Eurogamer with the details, so expect it to be quite true. What makes this something special here in South Africa, should it be true, is that the SNES never officially launched on our shores. You’d either import a SNES and the games or you’d download the virtual console games on Wii, Wii U or 3DS. Here are the details as per Eurogamer:
The SNES mini (or, to continue Nintendo’s official branding, likely the Nintendo Classic Mini: Super Nintendo Entertainment System) is currently scheduled to launch in time for Christmas this year. Development of the device is already under way, our sources have indicated.
Nintendo’s plans for SNES mini are also a major reason why last year’s NES mini did not see a reprieve from discontinuation, Eurogamer understands, despite the latter’s continued popularity and sell-out status.
There is no word on the games that will be included and what it’ll retail for, but for now it’s a bit of good news for SNES fans that it’s expected towards the end of this year.
