Launch problems are nothing special. Modern games seem to be rushed out the door with them being 70% complete and missing key features all because of an arbitrary deadline. Sometimes we just get a patch a few weeks on and sometimes it is a complete disaster that takes months to resolve. Sniper Ghost Warrior 3 seems to be the latter. The sniping game released today worldwide after the game has been delayed numerous times for “further polish”. Well, they must have run out of Mr Min because that polish seemed like it did nothing.
The first major blunder is the fact that the game has a 5 minute initial load time when you start it up for the first time. This is, however, only been observed on the PS4 version so far. That is ridiculous. Eurogamer even made a video where they show what you can do during the 5 minutes that the game takes to load. CI Games, the developers, have come out with an official statement about this that you can read below:
“We are aware of the problem with long initial loading times, but thanks to this decision we were able to shorten any loading times during missions, respawns, and fast travel to a minimum:
- fast travel 4-15s
- load last checkpoint (depend on situation) 15-30s
- Restart mission 25s
Ultimately we feel like this inconvenience is rewarded with a comfortable experience once the game is loaded.”
Even those loading times can be considered average or worse for any AAA game worth its salt. This just screams bad design since high fidelity open-world games such as Horizon Zero Dawn don’t have loading times even close to this.
The second major flaw is that the game doesn’t have multiplayer on launch and will only receive it much later during Q3 of this year. Here’s the official statement for that as well:
“CI Games, throughout our development of Sniper Ghost Warrior 3, we have had two focus [sic]: The first is to provide the best possible single-player experience in our most ambitious game in the Sniper Ghost Warrior series to date. This has always been our goal and we are extremely proud of all the work we have done, and that we share with you. The second emphasis from us is to provide regular content updates post launch, focusing on content that enhances the gaming experience.
Therefore, we have chosen to release the multiplayer update (that will be free for our players) after launch (the third quarter of 2017) for precisely the above reasons, that is not to dilute any potential from the single-player experience.”
Not to dilute the potential from the single-player experience, huh? That’s the worst excuse I’ve heard since my date cancelled on me saying that she started bleeding from the eyes and will now go live at a nunnery. It would have been easier to just say “sorry, we didn’t have enough time to finish the multiplayer” and leave it at that.
There is also word of poor PC optimisation if all this wasn’t enough. Overall, there’s no excuse for this game to have launched in this sorry state. It would have been less damaging if they decided to delay it again to Q3 when all the features are included and they fixed the insanely long initial load time.
