Welcome back! We know you were all underwhelmed by the Bethesda Conference, but guess what, Ubisoft’s Con is going to cheer you up. The team and I all agree that this year’s show was the best Ubisoft show and the best offering so far. Great games, some new ones and a wonderful surprise ending. Let’s take a look at the Oobisoft conference.
Mario and Rabbids: Kingdom Battle
The show kicked off with a cute video of the new mash-up Mario and Rabbids: Kingdom Battle. But before any of the game was shown, we were treated to a surprise appearance from Shigeru Miyamoto, from Nintendo. Both he and Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillermot have a long history together, so to see them share the stage was heartwarming and sincere. Then it switched (pardon the pun) to what looks like a badass Mario game.
It’s a tactical action adventure game that combines both Rabbids and Mario Bros. In a nutshell it’s basically a blend of Super Mario and XCOM. Not only is the gameplay solid and slick, it’s comedy gold with the Rabbids causing all kinds of mischief and mayhem. It’s a Switch exclusive, and it looks like it’s going to be a good one.
Assassin’s Creed: Origins
Surprisingly, Assassin’s Creed, which is normally Ubisoft’s bread and butter, didn’t take up a lot of spotlight. We received a new trailer and short (albeit pointless) gameplay demo.
The Crew 2
Before I get into this game, the trailer for it was the sickest of all the trailers at E3 so far. It’s got cars, boats, plates, bikes, inception, the works. The Crew 2 will make a motosport gamer out of anyone. It looks pretty and the range, scope and versatility looks incredible. Best news is, it’s out early 2018 and you can sign up for beta access is you want to.
South Park: The Fractured But Whole
Did you really think we’d go a year without some South Park? At least we got a new trailer and a release date. Ready for some super cussing this 17 October.
I like it when I see a game that’s interesting but vague. This year is has to be the new VR game Transference. The trailer features Frodo Baggins himself, well, actually it’s Elijah Wood, but still. It’s a psychological thriller that combines the thrilling aspect of movies with the gameplay of, well, video games. It looks like an interesting game, one I’ll keep an eye on even though I’m no fan of VR. According to the trailer it is coming out in Spring 2018.
Skull and Bones
The pirate game that everyone should care about – unlike that other one Microsoft is desperately pushing. Skull and Bones is an online multiplayer game that pits pirate against pirate in this all out naval war bonanza. It’s crazy stunning and the gameplay is smooth and delicious. Definitely a game to lookout for and the best thing is, it’s new!
Just Dance 2018
Remember what I said about South Park? Well, it also applies to Just Dance 2018. The segment started with some Daft Punk/ Mortal Kombat dancers and quickly changed gears to some bubble gum pop dacing. It was weird, but not as weird as the short and random appearance of Bebe Rexha (who?) on stage.
South Park Phone destroyer
Wow, even more South Park this year. This time, however, it’s headed to your phone. A new title South Park Phone Destroyer will take the turn-based combat and add a whole lotta swearing to it. You can expect it to release sometime later this year.
Starlink: Battle for atlas
Move over Skylanders, we got some new toys to buy. Starlink: Battle for Atlas is No Man’s Sky meets real action. It’s a sci-fi space exploration adventure game that takes place in a open living star system. The best feature is the new little toys that you can use to create your own spaceship. It’s on all consoles, but if you own Switch, you can take it with you wherever you go. It’ll be out in autumn (our spring) 2018.
Steep is back with a new expansion called Road to the Olympics. It includes a lot of new content, some crazy stunts and it’ll be out on 5 December.
Far Cry 5
The game that is causing all the controversy in the world just received a kick ass trailer. Showing off some off the new characters Far Cry 5 looks like a great entry into the series and I may actually play this one. You’re stuck in cult hell and there’s only one way out: guns blazing. It looks and sounds impressive and there’s plenty of boom boom and bang bang to go around. Plus there’s an adorable dog side-kick. Check out the vids below!
Beyond Good and Evil 2
The big reveal of the night is non-other than Beyond Good and Evil 2. Ubisoft said that it would not make an appearance at E3, but guess what, they did and I’m living for it. It’s a prequel that takes place before Jade is even born, featuring a new cast and location. It looks breath-taking and everything we’ve ever wanted in a new Beyond Good and Evil game, plus that monkey is super funny. Be sure to check out the trailer below. Maybe twice, or three times – your choice. It looks amazing and I can’t wait to see more.
That’s a wrap for Ubisoft folks. Now it’s down to David and Dawid to play them games and give us some feedback. If you stayed up to watch the show, what did you think? If you’re looking at the clips now, which games are you most excited for? Psst, the answer is Beyond Good and Evil 2.
