After 18 years since starting Arkane Studios, Raphael Colantonio is leaving the developer. This news comes three months after the release of Prey which was directed by Colantonio.
Colantonio announced his resignation via the official Bethesda website. He acknowledges the legacy he built with Arkane and its games but says: “It is time for me to step out to spend some time with my son and reflect on what is important to my future.”
With Colantonio’s departure, Harvey Smith will be taking over Arkane’s Austin based team. Smith was the director of Dishonored 2. No official statement has been made on who will take over the Lyon team, but Colantonio will be sticking around to ease the transition of leadership. Colantonio thanked not only the team and Bethesda for all the work, but also the fans of Arkane Studios for their passion and support.
Colantonio founded Arkane in 1999 and has been president since. The first game released by the studio was called Arx Fatalis in 2002. Years later, Arkane developed Dark Messiah of Might and Magic published by Ubisoft. Yet it was not until 2012’s Dishonored that the studio found massive success.
Dishonored was a critical and commercial success. It elevated Arkane studios to prominence with a strong Game of the Year contender. The game was released two years after the studio was bought by Zenimax. Colantonio noted how this partnership allowed Arkane to meet its full potential. Dishonored brought back the First Person Stealth genre after many years of dormancy. It helped elevate Arkane to a known name in the industry. The sequel, Dishonored 2 was another big success for the developer.
The last game to be released by Arkane was this year’s Prey. The reboot of the 2006 game of the same name was another success for the studio. It will also be the last game for Arkane that Colantonio directly worked on.
Colantonio leaves the company just three months shy of the release of Dishonored: Death of the Outsider. Announced at Bethesda’s E3 conference, the stand-alone expansion is scheduled for September 15th. The game will continue the story of Dishonored 2’s Billie Lurk as she is ordered to kill the elusive Outsider. Beyond this however, Arkane’s next projects are not known.
We here at SAGamer wish Colantonio the best for all his future endeavours. His work over the last 18 years has provided many amazing moments and thrills for players. Considering the quality of his previous work, any new projects are worth paying attention to.
