Cuphead will not be coming to PS4

Cuphead has been a highly anticipated indie title that has been notoriously elusive since its first announcement. We got a chance to witness some of its gameplay and the gorgeous Walt Disney style that it is using, but the game has been the victim of many delays and speculations of when it’s releasing. During Microsoft’s E3 2017 press conference, we finally got a release date for the game which is the 29th of September 2017. People have been wondering if the game will be completely exclusive to the Xbox One and PC, with the obvious question of if it will come to PS4 still hanging in the air. In a recent NeoGAF thread about the title, StudioMDHR, the developers, made an appearance and answered a bunch of questions that budding fans had, including the one about the exclusivity.

There was a question about the PC and Xbox exclusivity and this is what StudioMDHR’s response was:

Yes, this Cuphead game is exclusive to Xbox and PC (with Steam and Win10 versions at launch and a GoG release likely shortly after). There will likely be a Mac version down the road and possibly a Linux version beyond that (unless we lose our houses or whatever). We own the Cuphead IP.

So no word on PS4 or perhaps even more pertinent, the Nintendo Switch. StudioMDHR probably signed some kind of exclusivity deal with Microsoft’s ID@Xbox program with the added caveat that they can release on PC as well. However, other consoles will be out of the question entirely. It’s not a final nail, however, since the developers still own the IP and they can choose to publish any sequels or further iterations on other consoles once this game is released.

The comment about them losing their houses are in relation to the interview they did with Gamesradar where the two man team said that they remortgaged their houses and quit their jobs in order to make Cuphead a reality. It’s a tragic potential side-effect of indie game development these days and these guys are taking massive risks in trying to make their dream come true. Throughout the tumultuous development cycle of the game, these developers have put everything on the line when it comes to their game. Hopefully, it will be a massive success and propel them into creating more and better titles.

I am way too tall, played way too many games and I love to write about what we love about games. In the end, I'm just being #Thabolicious
