Mini SNES will set you back R1,249, up for pre-order now

Do you like playing older games? If you take a look at SA Gamer, there are quite a few retro collectors and lovers of the older games to be found. The previous mini console sold like crazy and, well, overseas people are going nuts for it thanks to low stock. SA will probably also have limited stock available, but possibly less people jumping at it, because there is this weird mentality that Nintendo only makes games for children.

Without getting into that though, we now know that the Nintendo Classic Mini: Super Nintendo Entertainment System will be here in South Africa on September 29, in line with the global launch. The console costs R1,249 and pre-orders are already up at stores like Raru.

I have been told stock numbers and they aren’t very high, and they are going rather quickly. In fact I ordered and paid for mine before sitting down to write this. Sorry I really love you folks, but this is a SNES we are talking about here.

The games, in case you forgot, are:

Contra III: The Alien Wars
Donkey Kong Country
Final Fantasy III
Kirby Super Star
Kirby’s Dream Course
The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
Mega Man X
Secret of Mana
Star Fox
Star Fox 2
Street Fighter II Turbo: Hyper Fighting
Super Castlevania IV
Super Ghouls ’n Ghosts
Super Mario Kart
Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars
Super Mario World
Super Metroid
Super Punch-Out!!
Yoshi’s Island

If it has the letters RPG in it, I am there. Still battling with balancing trying to play every single game that grabs my interest, getting 100% in a JRPG, and devoting time to my second home in Azeroth.

Is there anything else you can do with these little retro consoles? youtube? netflix? Or just a potential 1.3k paper weight once the novelty wears off

    • This is 80% for collecting purposes and 20% for knowing I actually got one 😛

    • Considering there’s one particular game launching on this for the first time ever (Starfox 2), and that Nintendo will likely produce very limited stock – it’s quite the opposite way around. Remember NES mini? Sold for R999? Have a look below (there’s a reason why many of us invest in Nintendo games – they often gain value).

        Fuuuuuuuuuuuck me. Jirre

        • And thats not more than a year after it released

        • they work on the “limited supply” principle. the mini is no longer being produced.

…i hate this, by the by. this particular sort of production line needs to die in a fire.

          • Kikmi

tbh it as always been nintendos shitty sales tactic, fabricated “rarity” under the guise of “oh we made a thing but didnt know if it would sell” bullshit ala the amibos saga

          • absolutely.

    • Stu

Looks like it can take the original SNES carts as well. That is a bonus.
      Can anyone confirm this.

      • Definitely won’t take SNES cartridges, as the unit is probably the size of a cartridge or smaller.

        • Stu

Is that a fake cartridge holder then, just to keep the aesthetics genuine?

      • Kikmi

That would be crazy cool if they did but I’m not sure I’ve seen that in any of the marketing material. Do drop us a link if you find anything strengthening the rumour

  • We are also limiting the SNES to only 1 per customer. No scalpers please.

    • Valshen

Yeah I saw that. Good on you folks.

    • good luck.

  • Treezle

    looks good…
