PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds has been growing in popularity since it launched in early access in March, and now it’s getting a major esports tournament in Cologne next month.
The tournament is dubbed the PUBG Invitational, will be held at Gamescom (23 – 26 August) and will have a total prize pool of $350,000 (about R4.5 million at the time of writing.) The PUBG Invitational will see 80 players duke it out over a three game set to determine the winner, and will feature all the available modes of PUBG such as Solo, Duo and Squad.
It’s exciting stuff, and it breaks a bit from the usual esports staples which usually feature more traditional multiplayer games such as MOBAs, Fighters and First Person Shooters. And it’s hardly surprising that PUBG is making it’s way into the professional scene. The game is not just very popular by players, but also people who enjoy watching it, which is probably why it has become so successful.
