Yakuza Kiwami 2 is set to retell the tale of possibly the best game in the franchise next year. In the meantime, publisher Sega is still doling out the marketing. Today, they have unveiled some screenshots of what players can expect when they return to Osaka.
Osaka is by no means new setting for the decade-old franchise. Sotenbori (based on the real district of Dotonbori) has been an explorable location since Yakuza 5. It made a big return this year in Yakuza 0 as one of the only two available locations. However, Yakuza Kiwami 2 will see the city get its first big graphical overhaul.
Kiwami 2 will be using the upcoming Yakuza 6‘s engine. In Yakuza 0, the area was based on last generations Yakuza 5 version meaning it didn’t stray too far from what we have seen before. This also means that on top of graphical upgrades, the map will also see some changes to match the time shift. The most obvious change is the removal of the park that used to be situated in the bottom right. Likely some other shops and restaurants have built in the area.
The screenshots are mostly beauty shots showing the upgrade given to the district. There are a few however that show off the wilder side of the gameplay. Two of the images confirm the return of a notorious side-story character from Yakuza 0. It seems the Obatarian has gotten friskier in the last three decades. Another shows off some new side story shenanigans and the pictures are quite catching.
Yakuza Kiwami 2 does not have a solid release date just yet for the English localisation. It will follow the next major entry in the franchise, Yakuza 6 which will be the first game to use the “Dragon Engine”. Yakuza 6 is set to launch locally on March 20, 2018 and while it might be two years after the Japanese launch, Yakuza goodness comes to those who wait.
