Pokémon GO welcomes the Hoenn Region along with weather effects

Trainers the moment you’ve all been waiting for is here, Generation 3! Later this week we’ll be receiving Hoenn’s three starter Pokémon Treecko, Torchic and Mudkip along with 47 other Pokémon new to the game from the Hoenn region. The Hoenn region features from the Pokémon titles Pokémon Ruby and Pokémon Sapphire.

What’s more…yes there’s more, is that Niantic is adding a new feature to the game: “a new dynamic weather system”. Indeed Niantic is bringing a storm, quite literally. According to the developer your local weather patterns will affect the way you battle and catch Pokémon. Rainy weather, for instance, will increase your odds of finding a Mudkip splashing around. Attacks performed during certain weather conditions will actually affect your battle. For instance, using a fire type move during a sunny day will increase the power of that attack. Niantics also adding little icons on the bottom right of your screen so that you’ll be able to tell what kind of weather your games actually picking up. Check out the screenshots below.

  • Weather effects? Isn’t this game draining enough on batteries as it is?

    • Kikmi

Thats more to do with shitty coding than it is particle effects. Weather data will likley be harvested from accuweather (or similar services) then associated to the gps location. Its a few extra 1’s and 0’s added on the initial header string. The battery issue is just poor coding practices, unoptimised code replicating previously made calls etc.

Even back when they lowered the resolution textures down significantly still made absolutely fuck all difference to battery usage. (One can generally assume a gpu with a smaller texture map to process would use less power, in many cases this is true, for Niantic tho? Nope.)

      • For sure. But adding more to the GPU is not going to help much sadly.

As long as there is not “snow only” pokemon, im happy.

    • Zain Moosa

I assume that we might still have a chance to catch snow monsters and that the weather effects are more so for increased chances of specific monsters.

    • Drake

I want Tropius as an Africa exclusive. But weather exclusives are more likely.
