SA Gamer Awards 2017: Best game nobody played

Sometimes an amazing game comes out and nobody plays it. Be it the marketing hype or eclipsed by another huge game, or competing in a crowded genre, things can get tough to stand out with so many games vying for our attention. Those that play these games and see them for what they are: ignored gems, will often sing their praises, but to deaf ears.

Dishonored: Death of the Outsider

Oh Dishonored. I feel like the world has failed you. Your narrative was amazing and playing as a different character breathed so much more into the world. Billie Lurk is a killer, but she isn’t cold-hearted. She is skilled and becomes even more deadly when she is blessed/cursed by the Outsider. Billie’s last mission is to kill the Outsider and through the game he questions, admonishes and plays with her, giving her the tools to kill him.

Her toolbox is leaner than Corvo Attano’s but that doesn’t mean you don’t have all sorts of tricks to kill, suppress or hoodwink the enemy as you pursue your task. I love this game and I wish more people did.

Runner-Up: Yakuza 0
Honourable Mention: Quake Champions, Matterfall, Nex Machina

If it has the letters RPG in it, I am there. Still battling with balancing trying to play every single game that grabs my interest, getting 100% in a JRPG, and devoting time to my second home in Azeroth.

  • AndriyP

My personal choice would have been Nier:A. Too little of humanity has experienced that amazing title in my books.

    • Buffel

It sold over 2 million copies. I’d say that’s a really decent chunk of people.

    • Valshen

Believe me, someone on the team tried to put forward Nier:A and I had to show them numbers. Death of the Outsider is sitting at 150k on Steam, 0.18M on PS4.

      • eVolVee

And Death Stranding is sitting at -0.00001. What is this NieR: A business?

    • DemonGamer

If only they made more physical copies . Do you know how long I had to search for a physical copy . Had to budge and get the digital version.

      • Space Chief (Iron Sharp)

I preordered from Amazon and got it like 10 days after US launch.

    • Space Chief (Iron Sharp)

Oshiri and zettai ryouiki, dude. That’s all this game had for it.

    • TechniKyle

If the bloody price came down I’d get it. Until then, I’m good.

  • Buffel

I’m mostly glad that the sales numbers for Yakuza, while not spectacular, are still enough for them to keep releasing those games in the West.

  • OneLargeBanana

What’s definitely apparent about this year is that it was ONE amazing year for gaming. So many titles that I’m yet to play (and far too little time for all of them).

    • Yes, tell me about it. We worked out that there was a minimum of 55 amazing titles. In other words, if you played and finished on game per week this year you’d still run out of time.

  • Space Chief (Iron Sharp)

Year isn’t over. Stella Stage launches Dec 21.

  • VampyreSquirrel

Can confirm I didn’t play any of those games.

  • TechniKyle

My vote goes to The Evil Within 2, but I have no clue what the sales figures were on that game.

    • Valshen

Sales numbers were low, but still a fair amount above DOTO.

  • For anyone reading this – busy playing Yakuza 0 and loving every moment with it. The dialogue is insane in this game.
