The Wii U will go down as a bit of a dud when looking at Nintendo’s console lineup, but that doesn’t mean it didn’t have some amazing games. Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze was one such title and now it comes to a console where more people get to play one of the best 2D platformers of the last 17 years.
Yesterday’s Nintendo Direct Mini brought a lot of port announcements for the big N’s stupidly successful machine. This was where Tropical Freeze got the spotlight with Nintendo confirming the big Gorilla is coming to the Switch. Luckily enough, we won’t have to wait long as Tropical Freeze for the Switch is releasing on May 4th.
Trailer for Tropical Freeze starts at 11:48
In the announcement trailer from the mini-Direct, the big new addition to this version is the inclusion of a new playable character: Funky Kong. Funky is too bodacious to be phased by the treacherous island hazards. Based on the trailer it seems Funky will give players a lot of options on how to cruise through the notoriously tough game. This will make Funky serve as a beginner friendly character who can just be ignored by those looking for the original Tropical Freeze punishment.
Tropical Freeze initially released for the Wii U in 2014 to huge critical acclaim. Developed by Retro Studios, it was the sequel to 2010’s Donkey Kong Country Returns, a reboot of the beloved SNES Donkey Kong platformers. Tropical Freeze was tough in all the right ways and a joy to play, made only sweeter with an impeccable soundtrack by the David Wise.
Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze is bringing the entire Kong clan to Nintendo’s hybrid. It is set for a May 4th release with no price listed just yet. Donkey Kong had another big announcement as the great ape will also be a new playable character in Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle. While it might have been a port heavy Direct, having the chance to play all these games on the go is worth celebrating.
Also, my main man Funky Kong is here so we should all be smiling right now.
