Super Mario Odyssey is the most fun I have had playing a game since Crash Bandicoot 3: Warped, or maybe even the original Super Mario Bros. Now, please note I said ‘most fun’. Is Super Mario Odyssey the best game of the last year? Arguably not. Is it technically the most advanced? Again, no. It seems that over the years, as the complexity of first party and AAA games has increased, we have often expected those games to dazzle us with their technical prowess. To impress us with multi-layered, multi-dimensional narratives. To intrigue us with characters that are somewhat ambiguous in motivation. The results have been some pretty impressive games, but it is rare that you can say at the end of a recently completed level – “Now that was fun!” or even just sit looking at the screen with a silly smile plastered all over your face. Super Mario Odyssey did that for me. That combination of nostalgia and innovation was the perfect mix for me. I managed to complete the main storyline and even challenged myself to collect all 999 moons. I loved it. I would love to have more of it.
So I was super thrilled to hear about the free add-on content coming to the game this September. Luigi will be making an appearance and bringing balloons with him. The goal will be to hide balloons, challenging other players to explore every nook and cranny of the wonderful worlds in the Odyssey, or to find the balloons that others have hidden. Sounds great – I’m in.
However, honestly – I would also have loved an extra world to explore. I could even be persuaded to pay for it. Nintendo has recently given indications that DLC is something they are actively pursuing – just have a look at Zelda Breath of the Wild. So could this be possible for Odyssey too? Well according to an article published by Nintendo Everything, Super Mario Odyssey producer Yoshiaki Koizumi recently chatted to Game Informer and was quizzed about the possibility of DLC coming to SMO, and his response does give us some hope:
“There’s a lot of volume [in Super Mario Odyssey]. That was a big focus in development. Give the player tons to do. We pushed ourselves to create as much as we could. I can’t announce anything specifically today, but of course, if there was a really cool idea for us to do, then we would certainly be thinking about DLC.”
So it is only rumours at this stage, but I really hope Nintendo is looking to this – I have a few good ideas for possible additions. I’m not sure if you can tell, but like Mario, I’m ready to get back into the Odyssey and explore somewhere new… Here we go!
