In my eyes, the BioShock franchise died with the departure of Irrational Games, but it wasn’t a mournful death since the series did reach a logical conclusion after BioShock Infinite’s Burial at Sea DLC. There wasn’t really anywhere else to go and a neat little bow was placed on the whole franchise. But an established IP is still ripe for the name recognition and 2K has stated that the franchise will continue, even without noted auteur Ken Levine. According to some new reports, a new BioShock game is being developed, let alone real.
A report on Kotaku by Jason Schreier explored the developer Hanger 13 and their struggles after the release of Mafia III. During the whole investigation and interviews done with developers in the company, some employees let slip that there’s a secret project codenamed Parkside that was being developed right next door to Hanger 13. Some sources did indicate that it was a new BioShock game that was in the works over there, but everything is very “tight-lipped”. One source saying, “if anyone from Hangar 13 tried to strike up a conversation with [those at this studio], they’d say, ‘Oh, we can’t really talk about it'”
Secretive, aren’t they? Even developers belonging under the 2K umbrella aren’t privy to what’s going on with Parkside. This is all a little speculative, but it does make sense that a BioShock game might be in early development. Considering how closed the franchise is, as I’ve mentioned, I’m assuming they’re going to develop a new type of game that has the BioShock systems and sensibilities but within a new universe. It scares me what they can do without the vision and ingenuity of Irrational Games, but I’m willing to give them a shot.
