The Diablo franchise is one of gaming’s oldest success stories, dominating its specific genre of isometric monster killing. Diablo III was met with some controversy when the game launched with a rickety online system and a real-money auction house, but the game itself evolved into something beautiful and viable after its expansion. It’s the definitive dungeon-crawling loot extravaganza at this point in time, but it’s certainly past its prime. One has to wonder what is next for the illustrious franchise and according to a recent job posting, we might be getting something soon.
According to a job listing for a Dungeon Artist on Blizzard’s website, they are apparently “working on a new, unannounced Diablo project” and need someone who “works well in an environment of peers who are passionate about working on the dark gothic world of Diablo.” All signs point to a new Diablo and the chances that it’s something like an expansion are slim. We could be looking at a new entry into the franchise or alternatively, some kind of spin-off that will still feature the franchise’s signature dungeon crawling.
While Diablo III has made its appearance in the current generation, there’s still a noticeable void in anything new coming from the franchise. If Blizzard takes the lessons they’ve learned from Diablo III and puts everything into a new game, we could be dealing with a juggernaut here. However, it still seems like it will be a far way off for now.
