Dishonored was a revival of stealth gaming in some respects. While you could just run around murdering people, it was better to be sneaky and skulk around in vents and on top of chandeliers. Arkane Studios did some fantastic work with the franchise and Dishonored 2, as well as its spin-off Death of the Outsider, are both fantastic experiences, despite them not selling incredibly well. Obviously, the question of where the franchise is heading next is hanging in the air and while it’s not good news, at least the franchise isn’t dead just yet.
Speaking to VG247, lead designer Ricardo Bare said of the franchise, “I can’t say definitively what might happen down the road, anything could happen, but [Dishonored] is resting for now.” When he was asked about what the studio will be up to next, he mentioned that they will stick to their strengths of environmental storytelling, immersive worlds and improvisational gameplay. There are no indications of what their next project will b exactly, but we now know that it won’t be Dishonored related.
This may be sad for fans of the franchise, but a third instalment of Dishonored might not be the best thing for Arkane Studios right now. I sincerely believe that Arkane is one of the best in the business when it comes to gameplay design considering the dizzying amount of options they provide the player. Whether it’s Dishonored or Prey, their games are always a joy to play. It will be interesting to see what they do next.
