According to Liam Robertson writing for Comicbook.com, Super Mario Bros. U could be the latest WiiU game making its way onto the Switch. After the successes of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, it only makes sense that arguably Nintendo’s most popular mascot would also be making the hop from one console generation to the next. Super Mario Odyssey is still one of the biggest selling games on the Switch and this just shows Mario’s ability to pull in an audience.
New Super Mario Bros. U is a return to Mario’s 2D, mostly side-scrolling, adventures. According to Robertson’s sources (apparently the same reliable sources that previously provided details about Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle), the Super Mario Bros. U move to the Switch will include the New Super Luigi U DLC as well as possibly some new Switch-specific content too.
As a big Mario fan, I’m excited that many that have not experienced this game will be able to do so now on their Switch, however, like many longtime fans I’m also starting to get a little disappointed with all the ported game news. This one is particularly hard to stomach, considering that Odyssey was released back in October 2017, and so it would make sense to expect a brand new Mario 2D adventure would not be too far behind. Personally, I would’ve been happier hearing about a Brand New Super Mario Bros. 2D coming out in 2019. Plus, despite the article explaining that the port of the game will supposedly be named New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe, a brand new game could opt for a far less clunky moniker: Super Mario BroSwitch. Perfect, right?
