Happy Tokyo Game Show week, everyone! I hope you’re having an exciting time so far, and if you’re not maybe we can help with that. Meet Project Awakening, a brand new RPG from the minds of Cygames.
Never heard of them? Neither have I. Turns out they’re super into making mobile games. But my theory is that those were all a diversion while they poured their true power and passion into Project Awakening. Apart from their announcement trailer released ahead of TGS, there isn’t much else to go by. What we know so far is that it is a new action RPG in an extreme(ly pretty) fantasy setting heading to the PS4 sometime in the future.
It was, however, also revealed that this game will be boasting quite an impressive developer team making it clear that Cygames hopes this will be their debut on the “real games” scene. The director of Awakening will be Junji Tago, who directed Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes, and Ryosuke Aiba, Final Fantasy XIV and Xenoblade Chronicles 2, will be taking up the Art Director role. And as we saw, they’ve done an amazing job to get our palates interested.
Personally, I’ve been a bit put off by fantasy RPGs lately what with Bethesda shoving Skyrim into our faces every two seconds. The only action RPG that has recently grasped me like they used to is Monster Hunter World, and since this game seems to centre around fighting big, bad monster I’m sure I’ll be just fine. I just hope there’s more variety than just fighting with a sword and shield. Close combat, like what was shown in the trailer, makes me anxious.
What do you think of it so far? Has it made you excited to see more? Or are you also spoiled by Skyrim like I am? I know there’s someone in the back itching to bring up The Witcher, so go right ahead and compare Project Awakening to it. I’m interested to hear your thoughts!
