Burning Question: Do you ever remove the main protagonist from your party?

Do you play RPGs? Almost any kind will fit this question really,  all it requires is the ability to control more than one character or a party of characters. Now I want to know, do you ever remove the main character of the game from your active party, or stop controlling that character, to be someone else instead?

Let me explain what I mean, and how I feel about it. Some games let you remove the main protagonist from the active party and I just can’t bring myself to do it. The whole game is about that character, right? You start with them and hopefully, you finish with them too. But then you try to take on an uber boss somewhere in the game (like in Final Fantasy) and all the guides recommend a party that excludes that main hero and I can’t do it. I find a way to make it work with the main character still in the party, and still as the active character because it is their story.

In fact, I often take this a bit further and I battle swapping to new party members that get added much later in the game. Everyone already has their role and I know how to cover for their weaknesses, so why should I bother with swapping with these new people? Yes, they look interesting and fun, but my setup is comfortable and it works.

Do you do the same, or am I the only one with these hangups?

If it has the letters RPG in it, I am there. Still battling with balancing trying to play every single game that grabs my interest, getting 100% in a JRPG, and devoting time to my second home in Azeroth.
