Last night, Rockstar Games announced that Red Dead Online, the multiplayer component of the upcoming Red Dead Redemption 2, will be coming in November 2018. The announcement was made on the Rockstar Games website. At launch, the game will be in the form of a public beta and Rockstar has conceded that due to the large-scale online experience they are aiming for, they are expecting some difficulties during the initial stages.
So what can players look forward to from Red Dead Online? Rockstar explains:
Red Dead Online is an evolution of the classic multiplayer experience in the original Red Dead Redemption, blending narrative with competitive and cooperative gameplay in fun new ways. Using the gameplay of the upcoming Red Dead Redemption 2 as a foundation, Red Dead Online will be ready to be explored alone or with friends, and will also feature constant updates and adjustments to grow and evolve this experience for all players.
The announcement included the information that Red Dead Online would be available to anyone that already owns a copy (Xbox One or PS4) of the Red Dead Redemption 2 game. With the game’s launch just over a month away (26 October 2018) we are sure that many will be happy the online component will come sometime later as it ensures that the new Red Dead is still firstly an important single-player story experience.
However, as with the original Red Dead Redemption, the now updated multiplayer component will also be a welcome addition. As touched on by Andrew Webster writing for The Verge, Rockstar’s combination model (similar to GTA Online/Grand Theft Auto V ) of ‘SP first with MP later’ seems like a viable way forward, allowing single-player games to survive and flourish in a world where online, multiplayer-only games become ever more popular.
