Xbox One getting official keyboard and mouse support

Microsoft has made no secret in the past about their intention to bring keyboard and mouse support to the Xbox One console. It is part of their strategy to merge console and PC gaming into one experience of some sorts, and it is a strategy that seems to be working for them. It has now officially been announced that the feature will be coming to Xbox One, and the first game to support it will be Warframe. The announcement came from Jason Ronald, Director of Program Management for Xbox:

At Xbox, we’re committed to bringing gamers more choice in what they play, who they play with and how they play. We’re also equally committed to providing developers with the best platform to create and deliver the best gaming experience on Xbox. Today we’re announcing a new way to play games on Xbox: we’re enabling mouse and keyboard support on Xbox One for select Xbox Insiders in the coming weeks. With this new input support at the platform level, developers can now build mouse and keyboard support in their games if and how they choose. It’s important to note that mouse and keyboard support for games is added on a title-by-title basis, entirely at developers’ discretion. Each development team knows their titles best and we support them in creating the right experience for their games as they see fit, to ensure an optimal and fair gaming experience. Warframe will be one of the first titles testing mouse and keyboard input when the feature arrives to Insider in the coming weeks.

Microsoft said that while most wireless and wired keyboard and mice will work with the Xbox One, they are partnering with Razer to bring us official Xbox One peripherals. We don’t know what it will look like yet, but we can expect some news on that in the near future. It’s a feature that’s been asked for before by many people so we could expect plenty of developers enabling the feature down the line. There is, of course, the usual concerns about fairness when it comes to competitive play, so we’ll have to see how things are handled going forward.
