If you hop on Discord, you probably saw something new there. Now all users of Discord have access to the store beta. Now before you shrug and bemoan the idea of another PC digital storefront, Discord is trying to do something different by having a highly curated offering of games, games chosen by their merit. No prize for guessing who the little dig is at.
We want to make it easier for you to find games to play with your friends. Our curated selection, editorialized content, and surfacing of social information should help you figure out which games are right for you. No need to browse endless lists of anime titles — we make it easy to find something great to play.
The store looks clean and easy to use, with tiny sizzle reels playing when you mouse over the games on offer. Discord also has a selection of “First on Discord” titles that will be exclusive to Discord (on PC at least) for 90 days. Currently, they have Bad North there, which has been tickling fans on consoles.
Discord is also offering a service similar to Xbox Game Pass, with a monthly subscription to play around $1,000 worth of games. This sub also gives you access to Discord Nitro for all the extra features and whistles. There is also a cheaper Nitro Classic without the games, but with features like custom avatars, custom emoji and a larger file upload limit.
Discord knows how annoying it is to have multiple places where you own games, so it has a universal library that scans for games and can launch them all for you, so you can stop switching back and forth looking for something to play before putting Netflix on.
