RDR2 grosses $725 million after three days

In case you didn’t know it by now, Rockstar Games’ Red Dead Redemption 2 is doing quite well. But just how well I hear you ask? Well according to their tweets yesterday:

“Rockstar Games is proud to announce that the critically acclaimed Red Dead Redemption 2 has achieved the single-biggest opening weekend in the history of entertainment.”

Yes, you read that correctly – ‘the single-biggest opening weekend in the history of entertainment’.  In a report quoted in the same thread, it is noted that: “Red Dead Redemption 2 grossed $725 million in worldwide retail sell-through during its first three days” and that “the only other game to beat it was Grand Theft Auto V which grossed $1 billion in the same time period”.

For some perspective, the top three highest-grossing openings for films are Avengers: Infinity War ($640 million), The Fate of the Furious ($541 million) and Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($528 million). Of course, movie ticket prices are nowhere near the price of a new video game, and those figures would include people buying tickets more than once in a given opening (which is unlikely to happen for video games). Nevertheless, no matter how you slice it the sales numbers are staggering.
