A lot of people had big hopes for what was planned for the Diablo franchise when it was shown as the first panel after the opening ceremony at BlizzCon 2018, a space generally left for the biggest, hottest thing in development. Diablo Immortal was revealed at the show, to a rather stunned crowd. For many of those in attendance, Blizzard means PC and being shown a mobile game was not something they wanted, something the crowd made known pretty early on. It appears that Diablo Immortal is not a project happening in isolation, however.
In one interview after the reveal, Blizzard’s Wyatt Chang and Allen Adham spoke about Diablo Immortal and mentioned something about what is happening in the studio:
“Many of us over the last few years have shifted from playing primarily desktop to playing many hours on mobile. We have many of our best developers now working on new mobile titles across all of our IPs. Some of them are with external partners like Diablo Immortal, many of them are being developed internally only. We’ll have information to share on those in the future.”
So get ready for more mobile games coming from Blizzard. If they do them in a fun way that doesn’t nickle and dime me, I might have to look at a new phone.
