The Birdman has had quite a lot of major disappointments recently when it comes to his game franchise. Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 5 shattered any potential goodwill with fans and was an absolute disaster from top to bottom. It was shameful how such a broken and cynical game ended up being released and it has more or less put the final nail in the coffin for the once legendary franchise. We’ve all been wishing to return to the hallowed land of Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 2 or even just American Wasteland, but those dreams are well and truly crushed now.
But wait, Tony Hawk is releasing a new game with his name in it. Unfortunately for everyone involved, it’s a mobile game. The game is called Skate Jam and will be coming to iOS and Android on the 13th of December. Not much is known about the game except for the information on the game’s listing on the App Store and Google Play Store. There will be a classic career mode, global tournaments, you can collect boards from Tony Hawk’s skateboard company Birdman and it will “set a new bar for authentic tricks controls and music in a mobile skate game, thanks to Tony.”
And yes, it is free-to-play and will have microtransactions. For what exactly is unclear, but they’ll be there. I don’t like to be overly cynical and like to give games a chance, but a Tony Hawk mobile game? It sounds like a mess waiting to happen. I’m entirely hopeful to be proven wrong, but this isn’t where the skateboarding genre is going to receive its renaissance out of the doldrums of complete mediocrity.
