The art of shooting people in the face is a timeless one. There’s nothing like the visceral rush of a good gunfight to get your blood flowing and even though it’s one of the most destructive things that you can do to a fellow human being, it’s still a heck of a lot of fun. Games have understood this since its inception and the First Person Shooter genre has been thriving for decades. So which shooty game took the gold this year?
Call of Duty: Black Ops 4
Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 was a complete and total surprise for everyone involved. We were preparing a casket for the game before its release due to the removal of the singleplayer campaign and the battle royale that felt like it was shoehorned in. We were all mistaken as the game went ahead and became the most captivating FPS game of the year with its extraordinarily varied game modes and pure shooting enjoyment. Its online-only nature is one that took a little to get used to, but if you allowed this game to get its claws in you, you might never get out. It’s good to see the Call of Duty franchise back on form and once more becoming the staple of the genre.
Runner-Up: Far Cry 5
Honourable Mentions: Battlefield V
